Introduction

Offshoring software development and testing has become a necessity for virtually every software producing business. My experience with offshore development dates back to the early 90's.

I have managed teams in Russia, China, India, and Brazil. I have also worked in an enterprise that supplied offshore services. My view from both sides of the fence has given me valuable experience about the true value and pitfalls of globalization.

The following articles share some of my experiences. The challenges are significant and can have serious long-term consequences if not properly managed. I have found that you can achieve excellent results by being selective with your outsourced work and diligent about managing your assets.

    Using Offshore Effectively
Offshore resources can be a blessing or a curse depending on how you select and manage the relationship with your offshore supplier. In my experience, you can achieve excellent results if you manage the operation proactively and mindfully. This article exposes the problems and solutions I have used to produce the promised benefits from offshore providers.

Balancing the Team and Balancing the Budget
Managing margins and competing effectively are at the top of every business manager's list of reasons to commit to offshore development. Driving down costs is paramount but it needs to happen in a way that protects the assets of the business. These assets, in particular intellectual property (IP), the people who create the IP, and the people who create value through their relationships with customers are examples. This article describes my experience striking the right balance and dealing with conflicting pressures from outsource vendors and internal finance people.
